What can I say about Viva, the largest rockabilly event in the world, that hasn’t already been said a hundred times? It’s just Viva—frickin’ fantastic.
Bands from all over the world descend on Vegas for one weekend every April, and for four to five days and nights, the universe is not the same. It’s literally non-stop, and you need to prepare yourself—there’s very little time for sleep if you want to soak up everything the weekend has to offer.
I drove my 1962 Galaxie this year, but sadly, just outside of Vegas, I hit a huge pothole and my fan punctured the radiator (crap!). Nevertheless, I carried on with the weekend. The festivities always kick off with pre-party events on Wednesday. The Rockin’ Betty gig and the Sand Dollar show were a great way to start what was to come. This year’s main showcase bands were Si Cranstoun, Imelda May, The Chop Tops, and the Wild Records showcase late Saturday night—not to mention the Rhythm & Blues Revue in the main room.
But I gotta say, one of the greatest things about this event is all the bands playing throughout the weekend that just leave you standing there in awe. Bands like Darrel Higham, Peter and the Wolves, Rusty Pinto, and Rip Carson—superb bands. But I dare say, in my opinion, the band that stole the weekend was Lil’ Mo and the Dynaflos. A jumpin’ tempo doo-wop band—killer guys, absolutely killer.
Again folks, the Viva weekend is top shelf! Just imagine 200–300 couples dancing almost around the clock, shaking the dance floor—not just to the bands, but to DJs from all over the world spinning rockabilly and jump blues everywhere you turn. Can I get an AMEN?!
The Saturday car show is always top-notch—never a disappointment. Vendors are everywhere, inside and out, all weekend long. And let’s not forget to mention the pool party events—always in full swing. I could go on and on, but really, it needs to be experienced. The Viva Weekender will take it out of you for sure. Come Monday, you’ll be spent and sleep-deprived, but as you grin from ear to ear, you’ll think of nothing but the fact that you’ll be back next year. The Viva Weekender happens every April at The Orleans Hotel in Vegas. Look for it—and make plans to be there.
