PhoenixEngine.com traces its roots back to Phoenix Engine Rebuilders, founded by Randy DiRocco, whose passion for mechanics began early, working alongside his father, Ralph, who was renowned as a “natural” in the field. In the 1960s, Randy became fascinated with muscle cars, working tirelessly on his first official car, a yellow and white 1955 Chevy BelAir, which he would cruise down Central Avenue in Phoenix. As a teenager, he began making extra money working on friends’ and neighbors’ cars, where he pioneered the concept of tilting the front end of vehicles—a modification that quickly gained popularity across the Phoenix area.
In 1969, Randy’s Auto and RV was created. In October 1973, Randy officially opened Phoenix Engine Rebuilders, and one of his first major clients was the Arizona State Highway Patrol, who sought him out to upgrade their patrol cars to catch drag racers—perhaps not realizing Randy had likely been one of those racers. Randy’s expertise in race cars and muscle cars grew, leading him to develop “pro street” cars that could be both driven on the street and perform at the track. His builds became known for their powerful yet reliable engines, including custom builds for Chevelles, Camaros, Mustangs, Shelbys, Dodge Dusters, Challengers, and many more.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Randy’s focus expanded to custom 4×4 vehicles, including his famous 1971 Chevy Blazer, dubbed “Big Red®.” This Blazer, equipped with a 427 stroker small block engine and sitting on 44” monster tires, gained national attention, with companies sending products for him to feature on the truck. During this time, Randy developed his skills in building high-horsepower 4x4s, satisfying the growing demand for trucks that could deliver both power and performance.
When emissions regulations hit in the 1980s, Randy responded by developing the POWER® series engines and cams, which offered the horsepower that muscle car enthusiasts craved while still passing emissions tests. These emissions friendly engines helped Phoenix Engine maintain its relevance and reputation for high-performance builds throughout the 1980s and beyond.
PhoenixEngine.com continues to build stock and performance engines for muscle cars, hot rods, custom trucks, 4x4s, and more. Over the
past 50+ years, the business has remained family-owned with Randy’s sons, David and Nick. The company has custom rebuilt over 250,000 engines, maintaining a reputation for reliability and performance in the challenging Arizona climate. With a commitment to quality parts and craftsmanship, Phoenix Engine remains a trusted name for enthusiasts in Arizona and across the USA, shipping engines coast to coast.
