Dougs Buggs n Bunnies in Mesa is your go-to-source for Air-cooled Volkswagens. They have an extensive Parts Department, an in-house Engine/ Transmission shop, and a complete Service Department. Here are a few recent examples. In the Engine/ Transmission shop a 2332cc turbo-charged and fuel injected V W engine has been fully built and will soon be installed into a 1963 V W Double Cab pickup. This 300+ horse-powered engine also features a Porsche cooling fan setup for improved cooling. Also in the Engine shop is a 1641cc V W short block build. It features new bearings, new .30 over pistons, rings, and new cylinders. As always, there were interesting Volkswagons in the Service Dept., like a 1969 Auto-Stick Beetle that came all the way from Oregon to have the rare Auto-Stick transmission fully rebuilt, that includes the unique internal clutches. The little dark blue Beetle will also be receiving a new custom interior. Up on one of the lifts, is a 1966 Beetle that’s receiving a new front suspension to replace the rusty original. The transmission (trans-axle) was also fully rebuilt. The three car photo shows a 1971 V W Bus that’s getting a complete rebuild of its 2056cc engine. Plus, the Bus will be fitted with a completely new Electric A/C system. The A/C compressor is NOT attached to the engine. This new electric A/C system could be a real game changer for V W owners that traditionally don’t have A/C. The 1971 V W Baja is in the shop for various repairs and upgrades. Progress continues on the light blue 1970 Beetle that’s receiving a full bumper to bumper restoration. Also shown is the shop’s Class 11 desert race car. Class 11 vehicles are basically stock based except for tires and required safety equipment. In the car’s first race, they finished in 3rd place.
